Short Biography

 

I had my primary education in Dhaka, Manchester, and Kuwait in the 1970s and secondary and higher secondary education in Dhaka, Bangladesh in the 1980s. I then went to India to study at the famous Aligarh Muslim University where I completed my BA (Hons), MA, and PhD in Linguistics winning the University Gold Medal for the highest academic achievement. My PhD dissertation was on the language of advertising in Bangladesh under the supervision of Professor A R Fatihi, one of the most prominent linguists in India.

I began my teaching career in Bangladesh in 1996 teaching at several universities until coming to the UK in 2004-05 to pursue postdoctoral research in Sociolinguistics at Edge Hill University. I then worked at Goldsmiths, University of London, and the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) in various research and community projects and also taught part-time modules at Edge Hill University and the University of Cumbria before joining Liverpool Hope University in 2008. My areas of expertise include language, religion and the media, Language of Islamophobia, multilingualism, language in education, language maintenance and shift, political discourse, and South Asian popular culture. I have supervised one successful PhD student and am currently supervising another PhD project.

I sit on the editorial board of the American Journal of Islam and Society published by the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). I have reviewed books published by Cambridge University Press and Kube Publishing and regularly review articles for reputed peer-reviewed journals published by Routledge, Sage and Equinox. I have so far examined more than 10 PhD dissertations from the UK and India.

 

I take a keen interest in politics and international relations and have written opinion pieces for different international platforms including the Huffington PostOpen DemocracyThe Platform, and Anadolu Agency.
