SENIOR LECTURER IN MEDIA

Short Biography

I hold a Ph.D. in Communications from Dublin City University, where I also worked on national and multi-country European research projects. Between 2008 and 2011, I worked at the University of Limerick as a Research Scholar while also teaching in areas such as media and cultural studies, media and discourse, culture and the market, and the development of Irish media. Since joining Hope in 2012, my undergraduate and Masters level teaching has spanned media and communication, journalism theory and practice, and digital media theory and practice. I have also held External Examiner positions for Communications degrees at undergraduate and Masters levels. During my time at Hope, I have published research in international peer-reviewed journals, including Journalism and Journalism Studies, have co-edited a book, and published numerous book chapters. I have also presented my research at national and international conferences.


Teaching Specialisms

My teaching specialisms include media industries, media history, media and communication theory, political economy of the media, journalism theory and practice, and digital and editorial development. 


School/Faculty Roles

I am the Chair of the Student Voice Committee for the English Subject Area (Creative Writing, English Language, English Literature, and Media and Communication). I am a Senior Academic Adviser in the School of Humanities, with a focus on academic misconduct. I am also the Ethics Lead for the English Subject Area. Furthermore, I am the Level Coordinator for the first and second years of the Media and Communication Major.

 

Recent Works

My current research focuses on international rating agencies as communication actors, and their impacts on political and climate change discourse. I have a research interest in examining the challenges facing local media in the digital age. I also research media framing of political and social issues, including the European Union and overseas aid.
