I am Associate Professor in International Relations, Academic Lead for History, Politics and International Relations and director of the MA in Politics and International Relations. I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I hold a PhD in Politics from the University of Manchester (Manchester, UK), an MA in Politics from Universidad de los Andes (Bogota, Colombia) a PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from Liverpool Hope University and a BA in Communication Studies from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Bogota, Colombia).
My broad academic experience in Spanish and English-speaking environments dates back to 1997, first as a research assistant (1997-2000) and full-time lecturer (2001-2013) in Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Colombia) and, since 2013, a full-time lecturer at Liverpool Hope University, teaching Communication (2013), and Politics and International Relations (2014-present) at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels as well as supervising dissertations. During my time at Liverpool Hope University, I have been the director of the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Centre for War and Peace Studies, the MA in International Relations, Peace Studies, and the MA in Politics and International Relations. I am currently in the Advisory Board of the Conflict Research Society (University of Kent), external examiner for the University of Leeds ISC, International Year One, member of the Editorial Committee and reviewer for the Colombian Journal 'Estudios Politicos' (Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia) and 'Signo y Pensamiento' (Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Colombia), and I have been reviewer for UKRI, British and Colombian Journals including Peacebuilding, Media, War and Conflict, Revista Colombiana de Ciencias Sociales, Estudios Politicos, Palabra Clave, Signo y Pensamiento, Papel Politico, and Anagramas.
My research, pursued independently or as part of a team, has focused strongly on socially relevant projects in partnership with the public and the third sector. My research interests focus on the area of political communication including relationships between states, civil society and media in the context of conflict and peacebuilding, and communication and international relations with emphasis on Latin American Politics. So far, I have published four books, as well as book chapters and articles in English and Spanish on on the impact of event driven news in the projection of US foreign policy in Colombia, the use of media by civil society organizations to foster democracy and human rights in Colombia and Latin America, the relationships between political and media systems, political and media debates regarding transitional justice in Colombia, and international cooperation, mediated diplomacy and peacebuilding in Colombia.
